pictures from the Holy Land

A Greek Orthodox Church is seen in this first photo.  We are reminded of all the beautiful early Christian art from late Roman Empire days, and during the Byzantine Empire after the fall of the western empire.  The mosaics in many old churches in Greece, Asia Minor (Anatolia) and the Balkans are quite impressive.

My brother-in-law and his wife are traveling now in Palestine (many people refer to this land as Israel) and in Jordan.  We share now a few images they have emailed back to the US.

This next image is of a fresco that depicts the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the river Jordan.

This is a spot that is claimed to be where Jesus was baptized nearly two thousand years ago, near to the Jordan River today.  Has the river changed its course slightly in the course of 2 millennia?

Clearly, this is an important site for Christians on pilgrimage.

We do not have any details on this next image.  But, it is interesting nonetheless.
