Blood in the Water: How the US and Israel Conspired to Ambush the USS Liberty

I cannot speak to US complicity in a conspiracy on this incident. But, many years ago, I read that LBJ (of Vietnam war infamy) did angrily order US Navy planes to return to base when these were flying to the aid of the USS Liberty.  After the murder of John F. Kennedy, no US president has dared to stand up to Israel in any substantive or meaningful way.

On June 8, 1967, the USS Liberty, an unarmed intelligence ship
reporting to the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the auspices of the
National Security Agency, was ambushed by unmarked jet planes. Rockets
and machine gun fire erupted, napalm hit the deck, and a torpedo blew a
40-foot hole in the starboard side of the vessel.

Lacking any means of defense, the sailors were powerless. In the end,
34 American sailors and translators lost their lives and another 174
were wounded — many for life. Israel confessed to the attack but called
it an “accident” and a “mistake.”

  1. Countries pretending to be enemies but secretly the best of friends (or at least faking even that much) to gain something in return. Reparations… for a debt that can never be repaid, perhaps?

That attack was before my time, and yet it still pisses me off.

    1. Yes, atrocities ought to piss us off even when they occurred before our time. There were many maimed for life sailors that had grounds to be pissed at Israel, and at the US government that hung them out to dry. Israel was sending a message to Washington that it would not allow anyone to interfere in, or monitor its war in June, 1967.
